Popular travel website Airbnb may soon accept cryptocurrencies for payments, CEO Brian Chesky hinted. “Like the travel revolution, there is clearly a revolution happening in cryptocurrencies,” he added.
Airbnb CEO says: “Clearly there is a revolution happening in crypto.
Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky asked on Twitter earlier this week, “If Airbnb could launch anything in 2022, what would it be?”
On Tuesday, he revealed that he had received 4,000 suggestions, noting that the most common one was that his company would accept crypto payments. He added, “Our current payment volume = $336 billion processed since 2013,” noting:
Crypto payments encompass a variety of distinct ideas.
Other top suggestions include clear quotes, a guest loyalty program, updated cleaning fees, more extended stays and discounts, better customer service, and “commercial spaces (kitchens, co-working)”. While he specifically confirmed that Airbnb is looking into commercial space, the CEO noted:
Already working on most, will look at others now.
Airbnb operates an online marketplace in the travel industry. According to its website, there are currently more than 5.6 million listings worldwide. Since its launch in 2007, Airbnb has served over 1 billion customers and over 4 million hosts have listed their properties on the platform.
The current payment options offered by Airbnb in most countries are Visa, Mastercard, Amex, JCB, and “debit cards that can be processed as credit.” Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Paypal are also accepted. Cryptocurrency is not currently a payment option on Airbnb.
Chesky was asked in November of last year if Airbnb was considering accepting cryptocurrency. Reply:
We’re definitely looking into that. definitely. Like the travel revolution, there is clearly a revolution happening in cryptocurrencies.
Noting that “the Coinbase founder was an early employee of ours,” Chesky revealed, “we’ve been following the space for a very long time.”
The CEO said: “The key is when ordinary people understand how new technology has improved their lives, beyond the initial excitement. I am really excited about some of the applications that ordinary people can use to live a better everyday life.”
