Visa CEO Al Kelly: I'm Smart Enough To Make Sure Our Company Is In Crypto

Al Kelly wasn’t sure what the future holds for cryptocurrency, but he said the smart thing to do would be to get involved anyway.

What happened: In a podcast titled “Leadership Next” recently, Visa company (NYSE:V) Fortune’s CEO Alan Murray said he’s determined to make sure the payments company is “in the middle” of today’s crypto developments.

“What I love most about our business, Alan, is that we don’t pick winners and losers. You know, while we’re sitting here talking today, I don’t know how far crypto will take off. Let’s say in five years it’s a fad and not a big deal? Too popular? I’m not smart enough to know it, but what I do smart enough is to make sure our company is in the middle of it today.”

Kelly said Visa is now focusing more on the movement of cash rather than just payments in general.

“If it does launch and we get our fair share or more of the scale, because we expect it to potentially take off and become a big commercial venture, we definitely want to be prepared for that, and I think we’re off to a great start.”

Last month, Visa made its first big move into the NFT space, getting a unique CryptoPunk for $150,000 in Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH).

The payments giant also partnered with crypto lending platform BlockFi to issue a crypto rewards card to US customers who signed up for one in December 2020.

“Cryptocurrency rewards programs are a compelling way to engage consumers in the crypto economy,” said Terry Angelos, Senior Vice President and Global Head of Financial Technology at Visa.

price movement: at the time of publication, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) was trading at $44,746.56. Visa shares closed 1.13% lower Friday at $224.91.
